How core value works
A forklift battery core is worth money because of the lead inside it. Recyclers recover the lead and the plastic case, and the dealer who picks it up gets paid for the material. That value flows back to you as a credit or a payment. The exact number is quoted per battery at the time of pickup — lead prices move, so there is no fixed price list.
What affects core value
- Size and weight. Bigger batteries hold more lead. An 80V pack is worth more than a 24V pallet-jack battery.
- Condition. A complete, intact battery is worth more than one that has been stripped or damaged. Leave it whole.
- Quantity. A fleet swap of ten batteries is a different pickup than a single unit — dealers may quote better per battery at volume.
- Pickup logistics. Batteries picked up with a replacement delivery cost less to handle than a standalone trip. Combining the two usually gets you a better number.
How pickup works
Tell the dealer how many batteries you have, their sizes, and where they are. The dealer schedules a pickup — often the same trip as a replacement delivery — and their crew loads the batteries with the right equipment. You do not need to drain, open, or prepare them. Leave them intact and upright in a dry spot.
Core buyback vs. scrap yard
A scrap yard will take a battery too, but a dealer pickup usually works better: they handle the heavy lifting and the paperwork, they come to your dock, and the credit can go straight toward a replacement battery instead of a separate trip and a separate check. Our scrap pickup page covers the full removal process. And if you are replacing the battery at the same time, start with our 48V replacement guide so the quote covers both sides.
Core buyback questions, answered
How much is my old forklift battery worth?
Core value is quoted per battery at the time of pickup — it moves with lead markets and depends on the battery's size, weight, and condition. There is no fixed price list. Send the battery size and quantity in your quote request and the dealer will give you a current number.
Do you buy lithium battery cores too?
Lithium cores are handled differently — they have no lead value, and recycling runs through different channels. Dealers can advise on proper disposal and recycling for lithium packs. This page covers lead-acid cores, which are the ones with buyback value.
How many batteries do I need for a pickup?
That depends on the dealer — some will pick up a single battery when they deliver a replacement, others want a minimum quantity for a standalone pickup. Tell us how many you have and we will match you with a dealer whose pickup terms fit.
Do I need to drain or prepare the battery?
No. Do not open, drain, or cut into a battery — the acid and lead are hazardous. Leave the battery intact and upright, keep it somewhere dry, and let the dealer's crew handle it. They have the equipment and the permits.
How do I get paid for cores?
Payment terms vary by dealer — some apply core credit toward a replacement battery, others pay directly. Confirm the amount, the payment method, and the timing when the dealer quotes you.
