Forklift Battery Technical Specs Guide
Voltage tables, sizing basics, and an honest lead-acid vs lithium-ion comparison — the reference warehouse managers and purchasing agents actually use when speccing a battery.
Voltage reference table
Battery voltage must match the truck. Here is what each common system voltage typically powers:
| Voltage | Typical trucks | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 24V | Electric pallet jacks, walkies, small stacker trucks | Light-duty warehouse work; compact batteries, shorter runtimes. |
| 36V | Mid-size counterbalance forklifts, order pickers, narrow-aisle reach trucks | The workhorse range for indoor distribution. |
| 48V | Heavy-duty counterbalance, outdoor pneumatic-tire forklifts, high-capacity warehouses | Higher power draw; common in manufacturing and lumber yards. |
| 80V | Ultra-heavy-duty trucks, port and container handling equipment | Maximum power; specialized chargers and infrastructure. |
Sizing basics: what a dealer needs from you
- Voltage — must match the truck exactly (check the data plate).
- Amp-hour (Ah) rating — sets runtime between charges; matched to shift length.
- Compartment dimensions — length × width × height in inches; the battery has to fit.
- Weight class — the battery is part of the counterweight on counterbalance trucks.
- Connector type — SB175, SB350, Euro-style, or other; cable position matters too.
- Charger compatibility — the charger must match the battery chemistry and voltage.
Lead-acid vs lithium-ion
| Lead-acid | Lithium-ion | |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | Lower — the budget-friendly entry point. | Higher — premium purchase price. |
| Maintenance | Scheduled watering, cleaning, and equalizing charges required. | Zero watering; minimal scheduled maintenance. |
| Charging | Full charge plus an 8-hour cooling cycle; battery rooms and shift planning needed. | Fast opportunity charging — top up during breaks, no cooling cycle. |
| Shift fit | Best for single-shift operations with charge windows. | Built for multi-shift, around-the-clock operation. |
| Lifespan | Around 1,500 cycles with good maintenance. | Generally longer cycle life with less upkeep. |
| Retrofit | N/A — the incumbent technology. | Not every truck qualifies; compartment size, weight, and charger setup must be checked first. |
Neither chemistry wins everywhere. Single-shift shops with time to water and cool often do best on lead-acid; multi-shift operations that cannot spare the downtime usually pencil out better on lithium. A dealer runs the numbers against your shift pattern — that is what the quote form is for.
Specs questions, answered
How do I find my forklift's battery voltage?
Check the truck's data plate or the existing battery's label — voltage is almost always printed there. Common systems are 24V, 36V, 48V, and 80V. The replacement battery must match the truck's voltage exactly.
What does amp-hour (Ah) rating mean?
Amp-hours measure how much energy the battery stores — roughly, how long it runs between charges. A higher Ah rating means longer runtime but a bigger, heavier battery. The right Ah depends on your shift length and how hard the truck works.
Can any forklift be converted to lithium-ion?
Not every truck qualifies. The truck needs to accept the lithium pack's dimensions and weight, and the charger setup usually changes too. A dealer checks the make, model, and compartment size before recommending a conversion.
Why does battery weight matter?
In counterbalance forklifts the battery is part of the counterweight. A replacement that is too light can change the truck's stability rating, so dealers size replacements to match the original weight class.
What is battery equalizing?
An equalizing charge is a controlled overcharge applied to lead-acid batteries on a schedule. It balances the cells and helps prevent sulfation. It is one of the core tasks in a maintenance plan.
